After a 12 year hiatus...the World Cup of Hockey is back. With a new format and renewed ambition, the event begins this weekend in a city that loves the game like few others, Toronto. Jonas Gilbart will be on the scene for us, covering the tournament, but first he takes a look at the eight team field taking part.
The hockey world has indeed descended on Toronto...as the best players from across the globe will battle it out for the World Cup crown. The hosts...are the favourites...and the two-time defending Olympic and reigning World champs have a target on their chest. But head coach Mike Babcock says...that's a good thing.
"Pressure is a privilege...do you want to come with no chance...or with pressure. I wouldn't have it any other way...neither would our guys either," Babcock said.
Adding to their opponent's troubles...Canada will also have Carey Price back in the fold. Recovered after a lengthy knee injury, the top tender for the red and white...gets the nod to begin things this weekend.
The United States may come in as underdogs...but they are looking to spoil the party for their neighbour to the North...led by the reigning NHL MVP..the electrifying Patrick Kane.
"What a great way to start the season...continue international play, another chance to play for your country...we'll have fun and hopefully for team USA's sake we can pull off a good tourney and win the whole thing," Kane said.
In a short tournament like this, one game can swing things quickly...Russian superstar Alex Ovechkin figures this one...could be wide open.
"I think all teams have the same chance...we played the Czech's and Canada...and I think all teams have a good chance. One loss and you can be out," Ovechkin said.
Perhaps the most intriguing team of all though...is the North American young stars team...comprised of players under the age of 23...and led by the "next one"...Connor McDavid.
"Good opportunity to make a name for ourselves...and put a real statement on what the future could hold...good opportunity for us," McDavid said.
