A government spokesman said an improvised explosive device caused the blast, adding that drug traffickers opposed to President Rodrigo Duterte’s crackdown or Islamic militants may have been responsible.
Davao city is Duterte’s home city, and is the third most populous in the country, with about 2 million people. It is about 1,500 kilometers from the capital Manila. Duterte was the mayor of Davao city for most of the last two decades.
