Xinjiang-themed cultural event in Tehran

With the aim of promoting exchange and cooperation between China and Iran, a large-scale cultural event is currently taking place in the Iranian capital, Tehran. The 7-day festival runs until Sunday.

"Twelve Muqam", acrobatic feats, a flute solo and Kirigiz group dancing. These performances are all part of  the "2016 Experience China in Iran-Cultural Exploration of Western China".

"I really like Chinese culture. There's a place in China called Xin Jing. The musical instruments used there are very similar to the ones we have in Anzali. I think the two cultures are very close, and I think we should have more cultural exchanges like this," one visitor said.

The 7 day-event involves several exhibitions, concerts and fashion shows all about Xinjiang.

It aims to help Iranian people learn more about Xinjiang and experience the diverse culture in China.

"These exhibitions show the close link between our two cultures. Exhibitions showing pictures and musical instruments help us to understand each other better. It also shows the Iranian people's interest in Chinese culture," said Ahad Mohammadi, President, Iran-China Friendship Association.

The event comes following a decicion by the leaders of China and Iran to boost cultural exchanges, as the two nations celebrate 45 years of diplomatic relations.

China's top political advisor, Yu Zhengsheng, sent a congratulatory letter to the event, saying it "will help Iranian people from all walks of life understand a stable and harmonious Xinjiang with fast economic development, and further promote bilateral culture exchanges."
