The United States and the European Union say Turkey must respect democracy and human rights in its response to Friday night's failed coup. US Secretary of State John Kerry and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini called on Turkey to uphold the rule of law at a joint news conference on Monday in Brussels.

"We also urge the government of Turkey to uphold the highest standards of respect for the nation's democratic institutions and the rule of law. We will certainly support bringing the perpetrators of the coup to justice, but we also caution against a reach that goes well beyond that and stress the importance of the democratic rule being upheld," said John Kerry, US secretary of state.

"We call for the full observance of Turkey's constitutional order and we, as the European Union, stress the importance of the rule of law prevailing in the country,"said Federica Mogherini, EU foreign policy chief.
