Hundreds of residents from South Korea's Seongju county have rallied against the THAAD deployment in their town.

South Korea's defense ministry on Wednesday announced its agreement with the United States to deploy one THAAD battery to the Seongju county, some 300 km southeast of Seoul. The deployment will take place by the end of next year.

The decision comes amid repeated expression of resolute opposition from China and Russia. The South Korean Defense Ministry said the system would be deployed there to maximize its effectiveness while minimizing any impact on residents and the environment. However, locals have voiced their opposition and urged the defense ministry to withdraw its decision.

"It is obvious that deploying the THAAD missile system on the Korean Peninsula for national defense is not effective. There is no best place to deploy the THAAD system in South Korea. We strongly urge the government to withdraw its decision. The THAAD system will destroy the peace on the Korean Peninsula and jeopardize our national security," said Oh Mi-Jeong, Anti-war protester.
