China's top track and field athletes are in the United States and Europe as they prepare for the Rio Olympics. On Wednesday, Feng Shuyong, the vice-president of the Chinese Athletics Association promised that China will send their largest athletics sqaud ever to compete at the Summer Games
Feng said the Chinese track and field athletes are looking to achieve better results in Brazil than they did four years ago in London when the team won 1 gold and 5 bronze medals. While many are aiming for the podium, others will hope to finish in the top eight. So far, 56 Chinese have qualified for Rio, which is five more competitors than they sent to London. Chinese athletes had good results in last year's World Championships in Beijing where they grabbed 1 gold, 7 silvers, and 1 bronze for their best haul ever. But Feng also stressed that some young Chinese athletes need to improve their level to stand any chance in Rio.
"More than 30 of the 56 are young athletes, and they had some good performance at recent national, Asian, and IAAF competitons, but this performance level is still not enough. For these junior athletes, they need to make full use of their final preparations to improve their performance level, and make their performances more stable. The competition at the Olympics will be more aggressive, and we can already see this from their Olympic Trials. So our athletes have to find the right rhythm, to try to perform our best at the Games, in order to have better results, and have no regrets," Feng said.
