In the face of disasters brought by floods in China's eastern and southern provinces, people are standing together to get through the tough times.

Heavy rain in Xuancheng in east China's Anhui province is threatening multiple embankments.  More than 3,000 people have been evacuated to Xuanzhou district's largest school.

Over 300 volunteers have been helping transfer the victims and distribute food and supplies. Some local residents even brought homemade treats.

"We made these pastries this afternoon. All home-made, and still warm," said a local resident.

Other good Samaritans came in and out to donate clothes and bedding.

"I saw the flood on the news. So I decided to bring some sheets, blankets and pillows from home."

Elsewhere, people have been helping out in other ways. At 4 AM on Sunday, a riverbank collapsed in Shengli Village.  Roads were blocked and there were no access to outside help.  One villager told county officials to tear down his house to repair the riverbank.

"I'd give up my small home for our large community. It took billions to develop the logistics park nearby. How much is mine worth? I can't be that selfish, right?" said Shengli village resident Du Zhengcheng.

After 6 hours of work, the riverbank was repaired. Du's selfless act saved the village and its people from further damage.  Now with the kitchen gone, there's no water and electricity for cooking. But Du says he doesn't regret the decision.

The local government says it's no longer safe for Du's family to live there and has promised to relocate them to a safer place.
