Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts has a busy summer line-up, including the first opera presented in the Czech language in China, a new Chinese opera about the Red Army's 'Long March', and a concert of opera highlights for kids.
Composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1900, the opera "Rusalka" is based on a Czech fairytale with a storyline similar in theme to Hans Christian Andersen's tale, "The Little Mermaid". It tells the tragic story of a water nymph and a prince and is regarded as a Czech national treasure.

Meanwhile, for the kids, there's an International Children's Day concert of excerpts from famous operas. Over 70 minutes, they will hear some of the most famous arias from 'Carmen', 'Rigoletto', 'Turandot', and the Chinese opera 'Visitors on The Icy Mountain'.
And the new opera 'Long March', which will debut July the 1st, is a homegrown production by the NCPA, developed over four years. Directed by Tian Qinxin, it marks the 80th anniversary of the Red Army's 10,000 kilometer trek to establish a new base in the northwestern province of Shaanxi.
