Opera lovers in Hungary are bestowing thunderous applause on a Chinese version of Puccini’s opera “Turandot.” It is a production by China’s Central Opera Theater and a key element in the “Spring of Budapest” art festival.

“Turandot” is one of the most renowned classics of Italian composer Puccini, but in 1989 a Chinese version was created by China's Central Opera Theater and has remained in its repertoire ever since.

The opera follows a princess of the ancient Yuan dynasty as she chooses a husband by giving out riddles. Those who fail to guess her three riddles must forfeit their lives. Puccini took his inspiration for the opera from China, and this Chinese retelling is proving an enchanting phenomenon.

China’s Central Opera Theater has frequently staged its “Turandot” abroad in recent years, notably in Puccini’s Italy in 2012 and 2015. And it is on a grand scale, with a 200-strong cast and crew and stage sets representing the Forbidden City, Chinese style palaces, and gardens.

Focusing on promoting tradition and classical art, the “Spring of Budapest” art festival is a major cultural event in Hungary. More than 50 shows and exhibitions will be held over 17 days, until the festival ends Sunday.
