China's promotion of the "Belt and Road" initiative has attracted attention to the scheme from around the world, including from Hong Kong. Several of the city's major business groups traveled overseas in April to explore investment opportunities, targeting a series of "Belt and Road" countries in particular.
Entrepreneurs from various industries travelled to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrghizstan. Eddy Li, president of the Chinese Manufacturers Association of Hong Kong, one of the four largest chambers of commerce in the city, says Central Asian economies are undergoing dynamic modernization reforms. He believes Hong Kong will benefit from cooperation with them under the 'Belt and Road' initiative.
"Tax is high and the market is highly protected in many Central Asian states. It would be hard for Hong Kong to do trade negotiations with them. Under the Belt and Road initiative, Hong Kong could negotiate as part of China. In that case, Hong Kong would be the beneficiary of any opening policy. I think this is an opportunity, and it will only succeed if we cooperate with the mainland," said Eddy Li, president of Chinese Manufacturers Association of HK.
