The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned the US missile defense site in Romania, calling it a threat to international security. The ministry accused the US move of violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, saying Russia will respond with military-technical measures.
"We continue to view the destructive activities of the US and its allies' in the missile defence sphere as a direct threat to international and regional security and stability. This significantly complicates the strategic situation in Europe."
"Russia has repeatedly pointed out the danger of a negative scenario in the development of the situation around the missile defence system. However, our concerns are still being ignored. We are making relevant conclusions from this, including taking military-technical counter-measures," Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the US plan was initially explained as targeting a possible missile threat from Iran. He said the situation with Iran had changed fundamentally, and questioned why the plan was still on the agenda. Peskov also said Russia's counter measures are to ensure the necessary level of the country's security. His comments came as President Vladimir Putin said Russia will further promote the development of military enterprises, with the focus on production and technical innovation capacity of new weapons.
