A US missile defense system in Europe is set to go live today at a remote airbase in southern Romania. The multi-million dollar "SM-Two" missile interceptor is stationed in Deveselu. It will be integrated into the NATO missile shield in July.
A US envoy to NATO says the system is a protection for European NATO states against Iran's missile program. He says the system is not aimed against Russia. But the Russian foreign ministry has asserted Iran's missile program poses no threat to NATO.
It also says Washington's move is a treaty violation that directly affects Russia's national security.
