An Afghan teacher has received death threats for fighting to stop the tradition of giving away girls to settle disputes. Khan-wali Adil has been camped out for a month in the capital Kabul, calling for an end to the practice of "baad."

The tradition is widely accepted among Pashtun tribes in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Young virgin daughters are traded to settle disputes for their older relatives. This may involve being used as payment in a financial dispute or as a means to end arguments and grudges.
