Philippines election: five candidates vie for presidency

Five candidates are vying to succeed President Benigno Aquino III in Monday's elections. But there were eight candidates when campaigning began in January.

Three of them have dropped out, leaving only five certified for the final list. Rodrigo Duterte is the mayor of Davao City who's running on a law-and-order ticket.

Senator Grace Poe is an independent candidate who supports arbitration on territory in the South China Sea, but also favors  economic ties with China.

Former interior secretary Mar Roxas is an candidate for the ruling Liberal Party. He's marketing himself as an expert on the economy.

Vice President Jejomar Binay backs an independent foreign policy and dialogue with China.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is considered an authority on legal issues, but she is unlikely to do well because she is suffering from cancer.
