Japan has agreed to lease military aircraft to the Philippines in another sign of deepening security ties between the countries.
Under the accord, Tokyo will lease up to five TC-90 training airplanes and help Manila train pilots and aircraft mechanics. It will be the first time Japan has leased its aircraft to another country since it lifted a self-imposed ban on weapons exports.
Critics believe it will aggravate the already-tense atmosphere in the South China Sea.
