Scientist believe, El Nino and climate change have both contributed to the devastating Alberta wildfires, according to a BBC report.
El Nino has caused much drier conditions than normal, leading to a massive increase in the number of fires in the province. There have been about 330 wildfires already this year, more than double the recent annual average.
High temperatures are also a concern. Fort McMurray recorded a temperature of 32.6 degrees Celsius in early May, while the normal high temperature for the period is around 14 degrees.
A number of published papers have centered on the fact that global warming is leading to an increase in wildfire risks. Studies have also shown that northern latitudes are feeling those impacts more strongly.
