The huge wildfire in western Canada that has forced a massive evacuation appears to have slowed its advance.
An official in Alberta province said the fires raging for days were moving “much, much more slowly” because of a bit of rain and cooler temperatures.
The last of 25,000 people trapped north of Fort McMurray have been evacuated in road convoys through the ruined oil city.
Fire control officials say the wildfire continued to spread east across the unpopulated forests, pushing toward the neighboring province of Saskatchewan. The threat to Saskatchewan communities is not imminent, and the biggest concern is the smoke.
Initial estimates of the area destroyed have been lowered from 2,000 square kilometers to about 1,600. More than 500 firefighters, alongside 15 helicopters and 14 air tankers, are battling the blazes.
Official say the fires could take months to douse.
