BISHKEK, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has resigned, the governor of the southern Kyrgyz state of Jalalabad told local media Thursday.

Koshbay Masirov told Ferghana news agency that Bakiyev would soon address a rally in Jalalabad, the capital of Jalalabad state.

Bakiyev, who was born in 1949 in Jalalabad state, fled to southern Kyrgyzstan after his offices in Bishkek were stormed and occupied by opposition supporters Wednesday night.

Opposition leader Roza Otunbayevain, prime minister of the opposition-formed interim government, told reporters Thursday in Bishkek that Bakiyev has no intention of leaving his post and was rallying support in Jalalabad.
