The name “Paul Simon” brings to mind classic folk songs like “The Sound Of Silence” and “Scarborough Fair”, but actually Paul Simon’s style is quite diverse. From 60s folk music to African-pop of the 1980s, to his later South African music phase, Paul Simon’s work reflects his passion for music and his boundless inspiration.
説起Paul Simon, 一定得提到電影《畢業生》和主題歌”The Soung Of Silence”。實際上在這部電影之前，Paul 就已經寫好了”The Sound Of Silence”，但那時的Simon只是個默默無聞的小人物。後來他正式和夥伴Art Garfunkel合作，這時為電影配樂的機會也來到他們面前，他們一炮走紅。
Paul Simon was the songwriter for the duo, writing both music and lyrics, and these songs, along with Garfunkel’s high, lyrical voice, made them the most successful American pop duo of the 1960s. Their records reached the very top of the charts, but due to differences in musical conception, the two of them eventually split up.
他們的合作結束後，Paul Simon創作了單曲”Bridge Over Troubled Water”，這首歌曲大家也很熟悉。這首歌使他進一步奠定了歌壇的地位。PauL Simon事業的成功之後是一段低谷，他專輯的銷量一度低得驚人，Simon感到驚慌失措，他覺得他已經處於失去創作靈感的邊緣。
This slump in his career took a turn for the better in 1984, when Simon discovered the lively pop music of Africa and immersed himself in it. The result was the new album “Graceland”, which became his most popular and commercially successful record of the 1980s.
説到非洲音樂，就不能不提到percussion“打擊樂“這個詞, 就是那種用鼓，鑼，镲等打擊樂器演奏出的音樂類型。Percussion本意是“擊打，叩打，碰撞發出的聲音” 。鼓，鑼，镲等樂器被稱為 ”percussion instruments”打擊樂器。
從80年代以後，Simon的音樂中就沒有離開過percussion。雖然Simon在後來有沉寂了一段，直到2000年才推出全新專輯”You’re The One”
