  1

Statistics announced by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) today shows that

China's Internet users receive each week an average of 31.9 emails, of which 19.3 are "spam". The percentage of junk email has now reached more than 60%.

"Junk" email mainly consists of virus-infected emails, online job announcements, promotional corporate advertising etc.

As the volume of junk mail increases rapidly, the ability of Internet service providers to filter it is decreasing, primarily due to improvements in email delivery technology and the destructive capability of computer viruses.

2 China has already become a “spam disaster area”.

Experts are calling for quick implementation of legal provisions related to the problem.

New laws concerning spam are expected to be issued in the first half of 2004.

According to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), 10 million spam messages are received every day in China.

Spam messages take up an enormous amount of Internet resources and cause net congestion.

According to 2003 statistics from the American Ferris Research Corp., cost for the entire world was more than 20.5 billion.
