South Korean warships are continuing to patrol near the island of Yeonpyeong, close to its disputed maritime border with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Meanwhile, a high-speed ship equipped with guided missiles has also been sent to South Korea's western waters.
The moves follow reports that the DPRK is preparing to test-fire a barrage of missiles from both coasts and is strengthening its defenses.
Seoul is also seeking to buy dozens of advanced ship-to-air missile interceptors from the US to bolster its naval defenses.
Along with the naval ships, coast guard vessels and vessels from the Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Ministry are also in the area to protect local crab-fishing boats who are in the middle of their season.
