Top seed Dinara Safina was sent packing at the Indian Wells tennis event Wednesday, losing to eighth seed Victoria Azarenka in three sets in the quarterfinals.

The Russian's run for the world number one ranking was also dealt a blow after losing 7-6 (7-4), 1-6 and 3-6 to the teenager.

Azarenka, a 19-year-old from Belarus, will face fourth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals.
