| The 2nd Annual Beijing Dance Festival ended on a high note Sunday. |
Sunday night saw an elaborate programme of short pieces presented by individual dancers and artists from national dance troupes. Each of the pieces boasts a unique style, examining a issue regarding the fast-changing society, difficult interpersonal relationships, self-struggle and bold exploration of the unknown.
Stealing the limelight was "Existence", choreographed and performed by Xing Liang from the City Contemporary Dance Company of Hong Kong. The 6-minute solo delves into the issue of self-pursuit of freedom. The piece boasts no stunning dancing techniques, but the packed house was enthralled by Xing's graceful movements and fabulous pliancy, as well as his seamless transition from agile motion to a sudden pause.

Xing Liang, a resident artist from Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company said, "Circularity, the motif of my piece, means satisfactory, and harmony, just like the wheel of life, the transmigration of souls. But of course I won't make it a scientific subject, that's not the responsibility of artists. I attempt to render the piece with movements related to circularity, to interpret the state of life and the peaceful mind."
Compared to the rather international approach of its first year, this time the annual Beijing Dance Festival focuses more on domestic productions. Over the past week around 50 original works from more than 30 local dance troupes have been staged at the Oriental Pioneer Theater over five consecutive nights. Many of the pieces have been specially created for the event.
The festival is organized by Beijing Dance/LDTX, one of the leading modern dance companies in Beijing which strives to introduce world-class artists to the Chinese audience as well as nurture modern dance within China.
