Sino-Japanese ties in the spotlight

In Tokyo, visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi met with Yohei Kono, the speaker of Japan's House of Representatives. Wu Yi's weeklong visit aimed to improve the currently troubled Sino-Japanese relationship.

On Monday, Vice Premier Wu Yi held talks with the Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives, Yohei Kono. Wu emphasized that the Sino-Japanese friendship is the result of many years of efforts by generations of Chinese and Japanese leaders.

The Vice-Premier made it clear that the major purpose of her visit is to help bilateral relations return to a normal development track. She urged Japan to acknowledge its history and cease activities that harm ties with China and hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.

For his part, Yohei Kono said leaders from both sides should try their best to help overcome present difficulties, and bring ties back to what would normally be expected. He said that booming cooperation between the two countries in some areas have made both more depended on each other. He also reiterated that further development of the relationship is significant for regional and global stability and prosperity.

Later, the Chinese Vice Premier delivered a speech named "Asia's development and the shared responsibilities of China and Japan."

Wu stressed that both sides want a healthy relationship between China and Japan, as it is very necessary for Asia's development, and to promote stability and peace.

Wu said, "The situation needs to be changed as soon as possible or the negativity will spill over into the emotions of the people, and make the situation worse."

She also pointed out that if the two countries want to realize their long-term development, the two have to strengthen unity and regional cooperation first.
