In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao for aid the Chinese people offered to Russian soldiers during World War II. The two leaders met following a Red Square parade and Kremlin reception on Monday, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe.

On the sidelines of the World War II celebrations, Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Monday.

The two leaders discussed major international and regional issues of common concern and talked about ways to further promote bilateral relations.

The Chinese President said the Russian people made great sacrifices to win the war against Nazism. Soviet forces also fought in China's northeastern region against the Japanese, entering after the US bombing of Hiroshima in August 1945.

Hu Jintao said the Chinese people also made great sacrifices in a hard eight-year-long war against Japanese invaders.

The Russian President told Hu Jintao that Moscow was happy with the current level of cooperation between the two countries, including the implementation of all bilateral agreements.

Putin said he was looking forward to a visit by the Chinese President in July. President Hu said the upcoming visit would give the two leaders more time to discuss issues of common concern.
