Presidential candidate Mahmoud Abbas

Trailing Abbas is independent candidate Mustafa Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian intellectual.

Barghouti was born in Jerusalem in 1954, and holds a PHD in medicine. He was one of the founders of the Palestinian National Initiative, a recently established democratic opposition movement. He now serves as its secretary-general. Barghouti has also been awarded several international awards, including one from the International Health Organization. During campaigning, Israeli forces detained him, and Barghouti says he was beaten.
