Chinese pop stars from the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan have come together to perform in one of the biggest charity concerts in recent years. This, in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the tsunami victims across southern Asia.

Hong Kong singers Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau, Taiwanese pop divas Chang Hui-mei and Coco Lee, and mainland singer Han Hong led other performers in belting out the event's theme song - a reworked version of "We Are the World".

The Hong Kong rendition, simply called "Love" features Chinese lyrics but keeps the English chorus of "We Are the World" - written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie in 1985 to raise money for Ethiopian famine victims.

A lineup of about 150 Chinese entertainers participated in the concert at the Hong Kong Stadium.

Organizers said they raised about US$4.7 million and that the money would go to the Red Cross, World Vision, Oxfam, the United Nations Children's Fund and the Salvation Army.

Hong Kong has launched an all-out fund-raising effort for victims of the tsunami-hit area with donors ranging from vegetable vendors to Hong Kong's top tycoon, Li Ka-shing.

Local media reported that donations from Hong Kong alone have exceeded US$90 million.
