NPC deputies to urge law revision

Law revision has emerged as a common concern of many NPC deputies. Of the nearly 100 proposals received at the ongoing second session of the 10th National Committee of China's top legislative body, most of them touch upon this issue. Many NPC deputies say the revision of China's current Labor Law is an urgent priority.

It's said that migrant workers from China's vast rural areas are the foundation of the country's booming urban economy. But protection of their rights is not always enforced. Many deputies say the current Labor Law, drafted many years ago, lag behind today's social reality and is inefficient in solving labor disputes.

Henan NPC Deputy Jin Suidong said, "According to the current Labor Law, a two-month-long arbitration period is necessary to address the delay of payments for migrant workers. This by no means helps them."

Guangdong NPC Deputy Wang Chaogui said, "Such stipulation has to be revised. As a matter of fact, migrant workers have lost the right to complain. There is no punishment or even fine against delaying the payments for migrant workers. The law enforcement should be strengthened by more forceful approaches."

The rural economy, industrial restructuring, and social security are also hot topics among the deputies. They still have three more days to submit proposals before the deadline Wednesday afternoon.
