Health officials in southern China's Guangdong Province have confirmed another suspected SARS patient in the capital Guangzhou. Prompt measures have been taken to isolate all those having close contact, for medical observation.
The 20-year-old waitress from Henan Province had a high fever two weeks ago. She went to the Yuexiu District Bone Setting Hospital. After blood tests and X-rays, she was immediately transferred to Yuexiu's No.1 People's Hospital. She's now under quarantine in Guangzhou at the No.8 People's Hospital.
Xu Ruiheng, a deputy director from Disease Prevention and Control Center, Guangdong, said: "The province's joint SARS expert panel has confirmed this suspected SARS case, according to the SARS diagnosis criteria defined by the Ministry of Health. We have taken every necessary measure to keep the situation under control. Medical workers have disinfected the compound where the patient lived. And 48 people who had close contact with the waitress have been quarantined."
Local health officials say the patient's temperature has been brought down and remained stable for several consecutive days. Authorities have stepped up protective measures for the medical staff.
