NATO and Afghan troops have searched for planted bombs and encountered resistance on the fourth day of their offensive in Marjah. On Tuesday, NATO troops linked up with US units deployed to the insurgent stronghold in southern Afghanistan.

Officials said Afghan and foreign troops have controlled most parts of the town and a large number of militants have fled the area. But the Taliban claims its members still control the town, and that coalition forces who landed in Marjah were now under siege. The Taliban also invited journalists to southern Afghanistan to watch what it has dubbed the "shameful defeat" of coalition forces.
