Pakistan orders security for media

2009-12-24 13:19 BJT

Pakistani authorities have ordered "foolproof" security for journalists across the country, a day after a suicide bomber attacked a press club in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Tuesday's blast took place at the gate of the Press club, killing a guard and an accountant. Seventeen people were wounded.

Peshawar was quiet and subdued Wednesday morning. City residents, shaken by the repeated suicide attacks, are further unnerved by this suicide attack.

Zaheer-Ud-Din Babar, Local Resident, said, "What sort of tight security is this? Bombers are calmly getting into mosques; suicide bombers and vehicles are freely moving on the streets. What is the use of such security?"

Zameer Khan, Student, said, "Every day we are under tension. When we leave home, we wonder if we will return home safely or not."

Peshawar, the capital of Northwest frontier province, has been hit by numerous bomb attacks since the army went on the offensive against Taliban militants in their South Waziristan stronghold on the Afghan border in October. But this blast was the first on a reporters' club.

Pakistan's Interior Ministry says the blast indicates a new trend in terrorist attacks and poses a serious threat.
