A suicide bomber has struck a mosque inside a police compound in northwestern Pakistan. The blast killed 12 and injured 28 others, including many police officers.

The attack happened in the Lower Dir region as police were leaving the mosque after Friday prayers. No group has taken responsibility for the bombing, but Taliban militants are suspected in the attack. The Lower Dir is next to the Swat Valley, a region Pakistani soldiers recaptured from the Taliban earlier this year. Despite the recent wave of violence, the Pakistani military has vowed to continue its offensive in South Waziristan and its crack down on other militants who threaten the state.
