Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

Beijing will ban the use of about 1.3 million automobiles for four days this month to test the effects of this move on environmental quality as part of a series of Olympic test events this month.

From August 17 to 20, cars with odd-numbered license plates and even-numbered ones will only be able to use the city's roads on alternate days. The move doesn't apply to taxis, buses, police vehicles or ambulances. Exhaust emitted by vehicles is considered a major source of pollution in the capital.
