Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

Right now, we go to Beijing's International Exhibition Center for the "IOC Olympic Treasures Exhibition" and find out why the Games have an impact that go far beyond the realm of sports.

The Olympic Games are a celebration of humanity. That becomes clear as you wander among the displays at Beijing's International Exhibition Center. The show is called "IOC Olympic Treasures Exhibition." It carries you through the spectacle of the opening ceremony and takes you to the triumphant moment when winners are crowned, tears in their eyes, a flag draped on their shoulders.

Due respect is paid to the ancient history of the Olympics. There are Greek vases with images of athletes painted on them. Replica of a disc, as in the "Disc Thrower" by Greek sculptor Myron, is showcased to evoke the games' long history.

Though the games have their origin in ancient Greece, the modern Olympics were launched by Pierre de Coubertin. In each line of de Coubertin's "Olympic Manifesto" one can see the fervor of the Olympic ideal first ignited by the flame in Olympiad.
