Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

Next year's Olympic Games in Beijing will require a massive security operation to ensure the safety of all athletes and spectators. But before then, security in the construction of venues is a priority. The head of security for the Beijing Olympics has briefed the press on progress so far.

Security chief Liu Shaowu says his department has created a complete security network for all Olympic projects. That includes 31 Olympic venues, 45 training venues and five auxiliary facilities.

Security work is also underway in the co-host cities, including Qingdao and Hong Kong.

Liu Shaowu said, "We have taken a number of measures to ensure security in the construction of Olympic venues: guiding and motivating construction companies, and strengthening the security management of venue construction. The identity of all construction personnel has been checked, and have strict inspection of all building materials."

Olympic organizers say there have been no criminal cases or security breaches so far.
