Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

With less than 500 days to go until the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, construction of the venues is in full swing. The Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground is one of the newly-built temporary venues, and is scheduled for completion by the end of June this year.

The Beach Volleyball Ground for the Beijing Olympics is situated in the eastern part of the city. The complex includes a competition venue and several practice fields. With a capacity of 12,000 seats, the competition venue is a pure steel structure, which resembles a smaller version of the National Stadium, or Bird's Nest.

Guo Shaoxiao, General engineer of Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground, said, "I think our construction is well underway. Speaking of the architecture, sand and facility, this beach volleyball ground is more spectacular than those in the past Olympics."

The grounds of the Beach Volleyball venue will be covered with some 17,000 tons of high-quality sand, which will be transported from Hainan Island in southern China.

The venue is scheduled for completion by the end of this June. One of the "Good Luck Beijing" test events will be held this August.
