In the longer term, investment in the sector will stretch over the next 12 years and will cost as much as 5 trillion yuan.

The plan is to increase China's railways to 120,000 kilometers by 2020. Key projects will include an express link between Beijing and Shanghai, and a railway from Beijing to Shijiazhuang, Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

Some of the lines will be built specially for the transport of cargo such as that running between Baotou and Xi'an.
