China to expand transport infrastructure

The government has announced an expansion of air transport and railway systems to boost domestic demand.

The Ministry of Railways has issued bonds of 30 billion yuan to finance railway construction from Lanzhou to Xinin.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation released 30 billion yuan to enlarge airports in the southwest of the country. The money was taken from the country's 4 trillion yuan economic stimulus fund.

Air terminals in Chongqing, Yunnan and Guangxi will be the beneficiaries of the plan. More investment is pledged for 2009 when about 200 billion yuan will be used to expand major airports in Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou. Construction will also begin on more than 60 feeder airports across the country, including remote areas, in the next two years.

More railway lines are planned in the west of the country to meet growing demand. The Ministry of Railways has issued bonds of 30 billion yuan to finance railway construction from Lanzhou to Xining.
