Thousands of local residents have gathered at the Millennium Monument to celebrate the one-year countdown to the start of the Beijing Olympic Games.

A public fitness show marked the beginning of the celebrations in Beijing and other co-host cities in China. A Drum and Qigong performance, as well as a dragon and lion dance, marked this special day.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people took part in walking activities near the center stage and in parks throughout Beijing.
