Ajax have joined league title holders PSV Eindhoven as the Netherlands' entrants into next season's UEFA Champions League.

This, with a big win over AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of the Dutch league play-offs on Sunday. Three second half goals settled the contest.

The Dutch Eredivisie's second place in next season's Champions League was up for grabs when Ajax hosted AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their play-off tie.

Trailing 2 to 1 from the first encounter, Ajax took the lead in the 55th minute. This, when unmarked defender Johnny Heitinga's low shot, beat the keeper. The goal stood despite the replay showing that Heitinga was clearly offside.

Ajax's lead was doubled three minutes later. That's when Alkmaar defender Ryan Donk deflected Tom de Mul's cross into his own net.

The home side wrapped up the three-nil victory in the final stages of the game, when Gabri calmly drove home, leaving the home fans wild.

Ajax wins the tie, 4 to 2 on aggregate. They'll now play in the qualifying rounds of next season's Champions League. Alkmaar have to be content with a place in the UEFA Cup.
