Special Report: Iran presidential election 09 |
Iranian media report the Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss ambassador to protest US statements on its presidential election.
The White House says it's "deeply troubled" by the growing rioting. It says the disputed election reveals an eagerness for a change in the Islamic Republic and that people's voices should be heard and not suppressed.
The US remarks have drawn strong dissatisfaction from the Iranian government. The Swiss ambassador agreed to transmit the message to US officials.
Since the US and Iran cut ties in 1980, the Swiss Embassy has been representing US interests there.
The US has denied the Iranian accusation, saying it has no intention of meddling Iran's internal affairs.
