Special Report: Iran presidential election 09 |
Scattered protests are continuing in Tehran, as groups of demonstrators challenge the results of Friday's presidential election in the country.
Witnesses say the latest street protests attracted hundreds of supporters of presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.
The protests appeared to increase in numbers by Sunday afternoon, as incumbent Mahnoud Ahmadinejad -- the declared winner of the election -- addressed the nation in a televised news conference.
For his part, Mousavi says the presidential election was hampered by widespread fraud. And his supporters have responded by participating in some of the most serious demonstrations in the capital in a decade.
To help quell the unrest government authorities have jammed mobile phone text services, blocked pro-Mousavi Web sites and Facebook and cut off mobile phone service in Tehran. In some areas, riot police used tear gas to disperse crowds.
