Special Report: World tackles A/H1N1 flu |
Authorities in Hong Kong say fourteen more people have tested positive for the A/H1N1 flu virus in the Special Administrative Region. This has brought the number of confirmed cases of the disease in the S.A.R. to 63.
Three of the cases are classified as imported. The other eleven cases originated from the same class of a school. This is the S.A.R.'s first cluster of indigenous cases.
Meanwhile, the S.A.R. government has announced a 14-day suspension for all primary schools, kindergartens, childcare centers and special schools to help prevent the spread of the flu. The Hospital Authority is planning to open eight flu clinics for managing patients with flu-like illnesses.
And the number of clinics will be expanded, if necessary. S.A.R. Chief Executive Donald Tsang says the Education Bureau and the Department of Health will monitor the situation daily to decide when to resume classes. He is also urging the public to remain calm.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said, "We have successfully postponed the time when local cases appear. The government will continue to be vigilant and fully prepared for the worst. There's no need for the public to panic. But they must stay alert and pay strict attention to personal and community hygiene."
