The concert celebrated the 90th anniversary of the May 4th Movement, an important cultural and political movement in modern Chinese history. The movement fought imperialism and promoted democracy and scientific development.

New stage sets were designed to suit the mood of each poem. Basic tones of red, black and white provided the background color, with the aim of placing the speaker in the scene in which the poem was written.

The recital was jointly organized by the municipal publicity departments of Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. It has toured extensively, with one hundred shows in Shanghai, Guangdong, Shandong, Tianjin and now Beijing.
