At eight o'clock on Monday morning, about three thousand primary and middle school students gathered at the Golden Bauhinia Square in the city's center for a flag raising ceremony. They come from nearly sixty schools from across the special administrative region. They were joined by nearly 500 students from the Chinese mainland. Together they read the "May Fourth Declaration". The ceremony has been held annually since 2006. It is meant to encourage the promotion of the May Fourth Movement as well as the love of China and Hong Kong.
