In recent weeks local governments in Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, Henan provinces as well as Beijing's Haidian District have released 21-thousand discount cards to potential travellers. Holders of the card will be able to enjoy a 50 percent discount at 49 major tourist destinations in northern China. Discounts are also available for transportation both by road and by air.

The local tourism administration in the Tibet Autonomous Region says it is expecting some 2.9 million visits by domestic tourists in 2009. Since the opening of the local sightseeing season, the region has experienced a wave of tourists. The number of tourists is up nearly 60 percent over the same period, last year.

The island of Taiwan is also witnessing an increased influx of tourists from the mainland. According to the Cross-Straits tourism agreement, the island can receive three-thousand visitors from the mainland every day. A surge of tourists is expected during the May Day holidays. So the local tourism bureau is planning to use the quota slots left over from previous months of this year to satisfy rising demand.
