The director of Berlin film festival Dieter Kosslick said, "I think there's a big development in China's cinema. We had these huge special effects movies here, wonderful films, and we had very tiny Chinese films each year. Now we are back with a huge story about the history of China, Mei Lanfang. Yeah, I think Chinese cinema is great and always a big surprise."

Chinese films have consistently won awards at the Berlin Film Festival in recent years, including Wang Quan'an's "Tuya's Marriage" winning golden bear for best picture in 2007 and Wang Xiaoshuai's "In Love We Trust" winning silver bear for best screenplay in 2008.
