The week of New Year holiday fun is over, and now we take a look back at how some people in earthquake-stricken Sichuan Province spent the holiday. Numerous cultural activities helped to take their mind off the trauma they experienced during last May's disaster.
In Beichuan County, one of the most severely damaged areas in the quake, a temporary cultural center has become a wonderland for kids. |
This is the Xinhua Bookstore in Dujiangyan, the first bookstore to be rebuilt in the city after the quake. During the Chinese lunar New Year, the newly opened shop experienced a dramatic surge in sales, selling three to five times more books per day than usual.
Many parents have come to buy their children books as new year gifts. The store is also offering discounts for children's books. A dozen popular books like Hans Christian Andersen's "Fairy Tales" have been sold out.
As well as stocking up on reading material, many residents have gone to the city's temporary cultural center to read, play chess and surf the Internet.
