Light the Red Lanterns tells an old tragic love story about a young couple. It reflects the country life of northwestern Shaanxi province in the 1930s. The romance was inspired by local folk stories of Zhidan county. So are the music and dance drawn from the local culture. The theme is an original dancing song from the northern part of Shaanxi province. The presentation of tradition is enhanced by contemporary lighting and sound effects.
