Brazil's immense grasslands not only nurture some of the world's best football players, they are also a paradise for kite lovers. In the largest city of Sao Paulo a kite flying competition is held every month to honor the tradition. The July competition drew over a thousand kite runners.

Sao Paulo Ecological Park served as the location. Kites came in flamboyant colors and infinite designs. There were cartoon figures and animals in the array. And each kite seemed to vie for attention.

Prize are awarded for "best design", "best idea" and "best craftsmanship". But kites must remain aloft for at least eight minutes to qualify for the awards.

These mammoths of the kite family feature multiple colors, and the patterns of snakes, centipedes and Chinese dragons.

The Sao Paulo kite flying competition has run for twelve years. Organizers register the scores of each competitor every month. The kite flyer with the highest score for the year, is declared the champion of the event.
